Title:
FIVE. TEN. ABACUS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2023053854
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
To solve the problem of using a method of counting up the number to be added or subtracted as an ordinal number from the previous number when starting the study of arithmetic because even children in third and fourth grades continue to use fingers for addition and subtraction, and often have troubles with calculations making mistakes and getting slow in them.SOLUTION: An "Abacus" for calculating without relying on ordinal numbers enables children to see and think about how to add and subtract various numbers by arranging a bead of five and five beads of one in a row and vertically forming three rows so as to newly find out a simple and reliable calculation method by comparing two numbers instead of adding or subtracting them directly. Also, the beads are rotated back and forth to change the colors of their back and front sides, so that the same color is used for addition and different colors are used for subtraction. Complement numbers used for carry-down can also be easily noticed by changing colors, and also, the number can be decomposed by moving a bead of one to the left and right.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
