To obtain a resin composition which contains little or no chlorinated or brominated compound and exhibits excellent flame retardancy by introducing a specified compound as a monomer component into a resin to combine with a flame retardant.
This composition contains a flame retardant and a polymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer component containing a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon having polymerizable double bonds and/or a vinyl compound having amide linkages. The condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon having polymerizable double bonds preferably comprises, e.g. a 1,2-substituted ethylene compound represented by formula I (wherein Ar is a divalent monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon or condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon group; and (n) is an integer of 0 or greater). The vinyl compound having amide linkages preferably comprises, e.g. a compound represented by formula II (wherein R1 is H or alkyl, and R2, and R3 are each H, alkyl or aryl, and they may be directly bonded together to form alkylene). A particularly preferable flame retardant used is one comprising a phosphorus compound.
