Abstract:

PURPOSE: To form a strongly oriented discontinuous fibril by feeding an organic solvent solution of a polyolefin to a spinneret at a pressure that is at least autogenous pressure and flash-spinning under specified condition.

CONSTITUTION: An organic solvent solution of a polyolefin is fed to a spinneret 3 at a pressure that is at least autogenous pressure and directed through an outlet 4 of the spinneret into a tunnel 5 at a lower pressure than one of the feed solution at a temperature that is lower than one of the feed solution and higher than the boiling point of the organic solvent. At a region near to the outlet of the spinneret but inside the tunnel the strands and the solvent are brought into contact with an inert fluid which has both liquid and vapor phases and has enough flow rate and strong discontinuous fibers are recovered. The temperature of the inert fluid in the tunnel is the temperature of the melting point of the polymer minus (2-40)°C. The amount of the inert fluid is such that (the total volumetric flow rate of the solvent vapor plus the inert fluid vapor)/ the mass flow rate of the polymer is greater than 4.5 m3/kg in the tunnel.
