To prevent breakage of a separator caused when it is strongly interposed between a positive electrode material and the inner surface of a negative can.
A flat battery has a battery can 1 comprising a positive can 3 opened upward and the negative can 5 opened downward; and a power generating element 2 in which a negative electrode material 9 is arranged on the upper side of a positive electrode material 7 through the separator 10, and the power generating element 2 is housed on the inside of the battery can 1. By expanding downward the central side of a bottom wall 12 of the positive can 3, a recessed part 13 is formed with a step on the inner surface side of the positive can 3. The positive electrode material 7 is received with the recessed part 13, movement in the lateral direction of the positive electrode material 7 is regulated, and the negative electrode material 9 is housed in a housing part 21 installed on the upper wall side of the negative can 5. The inner diameter dimension D2 of the recessed part 13 is made smaller than the inner diameter dimension D1 of the housing part 21.
