To provide a flat fluorescent lamp which can be driven by low voltage and has uniform light intensity.
Electrode layers 15, 18, transparent dielectric layers 16, 19, and phosphor layers 17, 20 are formed in that order on glass plates 11, 12. The glass plates 11, 12 are placed opposite to each other at a certain interval through a spacer 13 to form a tight-sealed discharge space, in which, discharge- use gas is sealed in. A number of convex parts 25 are arranged in a matrix on the dielectric layers 19 opposite to a light-emitting face. Field concentration takes place at the convex parts 25 of the dielectric layers 19, which facilitates discharge. Impressed voltages of discharge starting and discharge holding can be lowered. Further, pressure of sealed gas can be raised by lowering the degree of vacuum, which improves light intensity.
