To provide a flat image display device which has sufficiently satisfactory high shock resistance performance.
A shock resistant protection layer 20 is provided on an external surface of a front substrate 2 of a flat vacuum envelope 10. The shock resistive protection layer 20 includes a shock absorbing layer 22 stuck on the external surface 2a of the front substrate 2 and a shock diffusion layer 24 stuck in an external surface 22a of the shock absorbing layer 22. A light antireflective layer 26 is stuck on a top surface 24a of the shock diffusion layer 24. The shock diffusion layer 24 stuck on the shock absorbing layer 22 is formed of a relatively hard material, and when stress concentrating on one point is applied from outside the vacuum envelope 10, the shock diffusion layer 24 diffuses the force therefor in a surface direction to uniformly transmit it to the entire surface of the shock absorbing layer 22.
