To obtain a member having excellent sealing property and heat resistance and hardly generating the sticking to an opposite material (metal) by incorporating zinc in expansion graphite obtained by treating graphite with an acidic material.
As a method for incorporating zinc in the graphite it is preferable to be a method for dispersing zinc in the expansion graphite or a method for thermally melt spraying zinc on the expansion graphite sheet. In the method for dispersing zinc in the extension graphite, zinc is mixed with the expansion graphite. The shape of zinc to be mixed is preferably fibrous or powdery. The mixed quantity of zinc is preferably 500-25 pts.wt. and more preferably 400-50 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. expansion graphite. As the method for thermally melt spraying zinc, a method in which the expansion graphite is heated to a high temp. to give flexibility and after worked into a sheet-like form, zinc is thermally melt sprayed on the upper part thereof is preferably used. The thickness of the zinc layer formed by thermally melt spraying is controlled to 1-20 μm.
