To provide a fluid pressure elevator capable of quickly stopping a car without overrunning when an abnormal situation such as power interruption or the like occurs during low-speed descending.
This elevator is provided with a fluid pressure pump 212 whose flow rate is controllable, a fluid pressure cylinder 201, a check valve 209 provided between the fluid pressure pump 212 and the fluid pressure cylinder 201 so as to be opened, and a car 204 directly/indirectly supported on the top part of the fluid pressure cylinder. The speed of the fluid pressure cylinder 201 is controlled by controlling the flow rate of hydraulic fluids supplied or discharged from the fluid pressure pump 212 through the check valve 209 to the fluid pressure cylinder 201, and the speed of the car 204 is controlled. In this case, a change-over valve 214 is provided so as to have a capacity smaller than the check valve 209 for discharging the hydraulic fluids directly from the fluid pressure cylinder to a storage tank 213 and, during low-speed descending, the change-over valve 214 is opened to control the speed of the cage 204.
