Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound chemically stable to heat, light, water, etc., having excellent compatibility with general purpose nematic liquid crystal, useful for various liquid crystal display elements having a wide temperature range of a liquid crystal phase and requiring low-voltage drive.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [R1 is a 1-12 alkyl; L and M are each independently a single bond or CH2CH2; ring A is 1,4- cyclohexylene or (fluorine-substituted) 1,4-phenylene; Y1 and Y2 are each independently H or F; (n) is an integer of 1-7; cyclohexane ring is in trans-configuration] such as trans-4-[4-(2-fluoro-2-propenyl)-3,5-difluorophenyl]-trans-4'- propylbicyclohexane of formula II. The compound of formula I, for example, is obtained by reacting a corresponding alkenylbenzene derivative of formula III with HF-pyridine complex in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide and dehydroiodating the prepared (iodofluoroalkyl)benzene derivative with a base.
