Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-viscosity new compound presenting high elastic constant ratio, excellent in low-temperature compatibility with other crystal compounds, thus useful for liquid crystal display elements.
SOLUTION: This composition is expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are each cyano, a halogen, 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C haloalkyl, dienyl, etc.; X1, X2 and X3 are each CH2CH2, CO-O, C=C, CF2O, etc.; rings A, B, C and D are each 1,4-phenylene ring, 1,4-cyclohexylene ring, bicyclo[1.1.0]butane ring, etc.; X4-X8 are each H, a halogen or 1-5C alkyl, at least one of them being a halogen; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1; (p) and (q) are each 0-5), e.g. 4-{4-[4-(1,2-difluoro-1,5- hexadienyl)-cyclohexyl]cyclohexyl}-1-pentylbenzene. The compound of formula I (X6-X8 are each F) is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula II (MG is a mesogen) with a zinc compound of the formula CF2=CFZnHal.
