PURPOSE: To uniformly form the end face electrode film of a chip resistor by a simple process, by utilizing both notched trenches of the outer peripheral surface of a single spreading roller and the part of the surface except the notched trenches.
CONSTITUTION: A spreading roller 1 rotates intermittently while keeping the axial line nearly horizontal. A rod type base segment 3 turning to a chip resistor is arranged parallel with the axial line of the spreading roller 1. The end face electrode of the chip resistor is formed by coating the side surface of the segment 3 with conductive paste 4 which is deposited on the outer peripheral surface of the roller 1. Notched trenches la stretching in the axial direction of the roller 1 are formed on the outer peripheral surface of the roller 1. The rod type segment 3 is pushed in the notched trench 1a, and coated with the conductive paste. Then the segment 3 is made to abut against the surface except the notched trenches 1a formed on the outer peripheral surface of the spreading roller 1.
