To decrease the number of stages and to reduce a cost by making the number of times of masking smaller than the kinds of colors at the time of forming multicolor patterns on the surface of a product by using an ion plating technique.
Ion plating films 11, 12, 13 of plural colors varying in compsn. according to the kinds of the colors are first laminated and formed on the surface of a stainless steel product 10. The film 13 on the uppermost layer thereof is then partly subjected to the first masking 14 and the product is immersed into a solvent for dissolving away only the film 13, by which the film 13 of the uppermost layer is removed exclusively of the masking 14 part. The masking 14 is then removed. Next, the film 12 of the second layer from above is partly subjected to the second masking together with the film 13 of the uppermost layer and the product is similarly immersed this time into the solvent for dissolving away only the film 12 and only the film 12 of the second layer is removed exclusively of the second masking part; thereafter, the masking is removed. As a result, the multicolor patterns by the ion plating films are formed on the surface.
