Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide Pb-free free cutting steel for machine structure capable of securely exhibiting excellent machinability (partibility of chips and a tool service life) and mechanical properties (impact value in the horizontal direction) equal to those of the conventional Pb-added steel.
SOLUTION: In free cutting steel for machine structure in which sulfide inclusions are present, operation is performed so that Mg is contained in 0.0005 to 0.02 mass% and the sulfide grain distributing index F1 prescribed by the following formula (1) satisfies 0.4 to 0.65, or the sulfide grain distributing index F2 prescribed by the following formula (2) satisfies 1 to 2.5. Further, as to the explanation of the formulae, refer to the text: F1=X1/(A/n)1/2...(1), and F2=σ/X2...(2).
