To provide a friction member which has both a high coefficient of friction and good μ-V characteristics with respect to a member comprising a porous organic material, in sliding contact under boundary lubrication by a lubricating oil.
A coating film containing at least 5 wt.% of a chromium oxide is formed on the surface part of the friction member in sliding contact with a member comprising a porous C-H group-containing cellulose fiber sheet. It is desirable in the friction member that a coating film containing the above-oxide is formed on the surface part in sliding contact, or that the surface part in sliding contact is formed by combining a metal with an oxide, or a coating film obtained by combining them is formed on the surface part, or that the coating film is formed by flame spraying.
