To provide friction stir joining equipment which prevents bearings of a spindle from deteriorating owing to the heat generated by the friction stir joining and allows the material to be joined to be cooled simply and effectively and friction stir joining method using the same.
This friction stir joining equipment 1 is provided with a probe 3 which joints the material to be joined 2a, 2b by the friction stir joining, the spindle 4 which supports the probe 3 on one edge, a casing 8 which holds the spindle 4 freely rotationably via bearings 5, 6 and 7 and a backing jig 9 which supports at least the back surface of a joining part of the material to be joined 2a, 2b. Further, this friction stir joining equipment 1 is provided with a spindle cooling mechanism for cooling the spindle 4 and a temperature controlling means for cooling the material to be joined 2a, 2b.
