To provide a friction variable speed transmission unit of simple structure causing no increase in operation load in shifting by appropriately performing friction engagement between rotary discs on the driving side and driven side.
This friction variable speed transmission unit has a driving side rotary disc supported in a relative rotation and axial movement disabled manner to an input shaft; a driven side rotary disc supported in a relative rotation disabled but axially movable manner to the output shaft, with the peripheral edge part brought into frictional contact with a disc surface of the driving side rotary disc; a sliding member movably installed on the inner surface of a housing so as to be movable integrally with the driven side rotary disc; and an energizing mechanism for energizing the driven side rotary disc toward the driving side rotary disc. The energizing mechanism presses the sliding member so that the driven side rotary disc is pressed toward the driving side rotary disc by a pressure fluid from a pressure generator operatively driven by the input shaft.
