To provide a frost deposit detection device that prevents degradation of a light emitter even if used for a long period, and reduces maintenance load of replacing light emitters.
The frost deposit detection device has a sensor 7 provided with a light emitter which emits light toward a heat exchanger 3 that frost deposit occurs, and a photodetector which receives light reflected from frost that is attached to the heat exchanger 3 and generates electric signals corresponding to the amount of light, a defrost portion which removes frost attached to the heat exchanger 3 using a heater 10, and a circuit 9 provided with an operation circuit which performs operation processing using the electric signals from the photodetector of the sensor 7 and a controller which controls the defrost portion based on an operation result of the operation circuit. The light emitter of the sensor 7 is not continuously turned on but intermittently turned on, and detects frost deposit. In addition, if lighting on time is T1 in the case of intermittent lighting, and a time constant of the operation circuit is T, 3×T<T1 is satisfied and the addition of lighting on time and lighting off time of the light emitter (T1+T2) is ≤60 seconds.
