To provide a fuel cell which discharges as appropriate the carbon dioxide gas generated from an anode catalyst layer with the progress of the battery reaction and in which deterioration of battery output characteristics due to increase of internal pressure by dioxide gas is reduced.
The fuel cell is equipped with: a cathode catalyst layer 2; an anode catalyst layer 3; a proton conductive film 6 arranged between the cathode layer 2 and the anode catalyst layer 3; a liquid fuel tank 9 for storing the liquid fuel L; a fuel vaporization layer 10 for supplying the vaporized component of the liquid fuel to the anode catalyst layer 3; and a vaporized fuel housing chamber 12 formed between the fuel vaporization layer 10 and the anode catalyst layer 3. An internal pressure release mechanism 20 is provided which discharges the gas containing carbon dioxide generated in the anode catalyst layer 3 to the outside of the battery from the side wall of the vaporized fuel housing chamber 12.
