Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel reformer able to perform cold start in a short time without a particular equipment or utilities and to prevent poisoning a reforming catalyst and a fuel cell and easy to be compact for setting in car and its starting method.
SOLUTION: A combustion/reforming catalyst 15 consists of a plurality of catalytic layers 15a, 15b and 15c arranged in series at mutual intervals. Air preheated at a preheater is fed in parallel to each upstream side of the catalytic layers while stopping fuel gas supply at cold start and the whole catalyst temperature is simultaneously increased by self-generation of heat at the catalyst in each catalytic layer. After the whole catalyst temperature is increased to be able to perform combustion/reforming reaction, air supply is once stopped and then fuel gas supply is started and consequently air flow is controlled that the temperature in the catalyst does not exceed its heat-resisting temperature.
