The device is provided with a document registering program 114 registering text data and picture data, a layout recognizing program 115 executing layout recognition with respect to the picture data, a character recognizing program 116 executing character recognition with respect to an area judged to be a character and a table area as the result of the layout recognition, a character string retrieving program 117 retrieving a document in which the retrieving character string exists, from among the registered data, a retrieving result displaying program 118 displaying the document in which the retrieving character string exists, in a list form and reversely displaying the retrieving character string in the document and a picture data displaying program 119 displaying picture data in which the retrieving character string exists and reversely displaying the picture data corresponding to the retrieving character string.
