PURPOSE: To obtain methano-crosslinked fullerene derivs. by allowing fullerenes or their derivs. to react with phosphor ylide in an inert medium at a specified temp.
CONSTITUTION: Fullerene C20+2m [(m) is 20-100] is allowed to react with phosphor ylide in a molar ratio of 8:1 to 0.5:1 to the Fullerene in an inert org. solvent at -78 to +180°C to obtain the objective methano-crosslinked fullerene deriv. of the formula, wherein F is fullerene C20+2m [(m) is 20-100]; R4 is H, CH3, phenyl or R5; R5 is 2-20C alkyl, one or more CH. groups can be substd. by-CE≡C-, -CH=CH-, -O-, -S-, -OOC-, -COO-, -SiR32-, -CO-, phenylenediyl or cyclohexylenediyl and one or more H atoms can be substd. by F, Cl, Br, I, OH or tetrahydropyranyoxy; both R' and R5 may be =C=X [X is O, S, NR3 or (O-R3)2]; R3 is phenyl or 1-12C alkyl; and (n) is 1-6.
