To provide an inexpensive, functional fluoropolymer material which is excellent in heat resistance, chemical resistance, physicochemical functions and durability and offers a high design freedom of various characteristics, and its preparation method.
The functional fluoropolymer material has a main chain which contains a fluoropolymer and a graft chain which comprises a perfluorovinyl monomer unit and has a sulfonic acid group at its end. In the preparation method of the functional fluoropolymer material, a perfluorovinyl monomer is grafted to the fluoropolymer, a fluoroalkyl halogen moiety represented by the formula: Rf-X (wherein Rf is a fluoroalkyl group; and X is at least one halogen other than fluorine) at the end of the graft chain is treated with a sulfite compound, sulfur oxide or bisulfide to convert the fluoroalkyl halogen moiety into a moiety represented by the formula: Rf-Y (wherein Rf is a fluoroalkyl group; and Y is a sulfinic acid group), and the fluoropolymer is subsequently reacted with an oxidizer to convert the sulfinic acid group into a sulfonic acid group.
