To obtain high precision alignment including optical deviation of a polarization plane by a stress imparting part and to reduce aligning time, in the fusion splicing of a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
In the fusion splicing method for a pair of optical fibers 20a, 20b, with the polarization plane conserved by arranging a stress imparting part on both sides of the core part, the method is characterized by the fusion splicing in which a pair of abutting parts of the optical fibers 20a, 20b are placed on a fusion splicing device 21, to be aligned by image observation 26x, 26y from two axes orthogonally crossing the optical axis of the optical fibers, and in which the polarization planes of the pair of optical fibers 20a, 20b are then detected by an image monitor for alignment, to be corrected by an optical power monitors 24, 25 for fusion splicing.
