Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a highly active ethylbenzene dehydrogenating catalyst by mixing an ethylene glycol solution of an iron salt with an ethylene glycol solution of in alkali metal compound and producing the catalyst according to a sol-gel method.

CONSTITUTION: An iron salt such as ferric nitrate or ferric sulfate and an alkali metal compound such as caustic potash or potassium carbonate are separately dissolved in ethylene glycol. Next, both solutions are mixed unter stirring and, further, the mixed ethylene glycol solution is heated under stirring and held under heating to accelerate gelling reaction. Thereafter, the gelled substance is repeatedly dried and ground to form dry matter which is, in turn, baked. The catalyst powder thus obtained becomes a highly active ethylbenzene dehydrogenating catalyst and is used industrially.
