To obtain a gas barrier coating composition having extremely small transmittance to oxygen even under high humidity, not causing whitening of coating film when coated and harmless to human bodies.
This gas barrier coating composition comprises (a) a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin, (b) at least one kind of compound selected from a group consisting of a metal alcoholate represented by the formula R1mM(OR2)n, a hydrolyzate of the metal alcoholate, a condensation product of the metal alcoholate, a chelate compound of the metal alcoholate, a hydrolyzate of the metal chelate compound, a metal acylate, a hydrolyzate of the metal acylate and a condensation product of the metal acylate and (c) a solvent, and the solvent contains water and a hydrophilic organic solvent as main components at a ratio of (50 wt.%/50 wt.%) to (20 wt.%/80 wt.%). This gas barrier film is obtained by laminating a coating film formed of the composition on a synthetic resin film or a synthetic resin film provided with a vapor deposited film of a metal and/or an inorganic compound.
