PURPOSE: To prevent the reduction of performance due to channelling and flooding by a method wherein catalyst packed bed within a gas-liquid contacting tower where gas such as H2 is contacted countercurrently with water in the form of liquid, is divided into a lot of vertically long and slender chambers by thin tubes which are open-ended up and down.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst packed bed within a cuntercurrent gas-liquid contacting tower where hydrogen isotope exchange reaction between water and H2 gas is carried out, is divided into a lot of vertically long and slender chambers by thin tubes which are open-ended up and down. When the walls of the chambers are hydrophilic catalyst rather than hydrophobic catalyst, the walls of the thin tubes are covered with water and wetted with water. As water flows down in a state of wall, the packed bed has wide free surface of water, and the molecular exchange reaction velocity between water (liquid) and steam (gas) is improved. Hence, the hydrogen isotope exchange reaction velocity between H2 gas and water (liquid) is improved.
