To relax a size limit of electronic mail received by a gateway device that delivers the electronic mail from a mail server device to a client device.
A main control unit 1 of an S/MIME gateway device 20 performs control to receive the electronic mail of the client personal computer 30 from the mail server device 40 and to store it in a RAM 7. The RAM 7 includes a user mail box 8 corresponding to each client personal computer 30 and one common mail box 8A having a larger size than each user mail box 8. The main control unit 1 stores a received electronic mail in a user mail box 8 thereof when the size of the received electronic mail is less than the size of the user mail box 8 corresponding to a client personal computer 30 at its destination, and stores the received electronic mail in the common mail box 8A when the size of the received electronic mail is larger than the size of the corresponding user mail box 8.
