To obtain a gel composition having remarkably low hardness compared with conventional gel, excellent compatibility and dispersibility, exhibiting excellent spreadability to the skin and hair in the case of using as a cosmetic, readily exhibiting the unique properties of silk such as affinity and protecting action, giving improved feeling in use and having high versatility, and provide a method for easily producing the gel composition in a short time at a low cost.

The gel composition contains a silk fibroin and a polyol. The gel composition is produced by mixing a silk fibroin solution, an acidic water and a polyol and gelatinizing the mixture or treating the silk fibroin solution with a strong acid cation exchange resin, mixing with a polyol and gelatinizing the mixture.
