Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for decreasing the risk for developing pancreatitis.SOLUTION: Gemcabene, a carboxyalkylether, represented by formula (I) is effective in the treatment and prevention of pancreatitis in subjects. The compound can be administered in an effective dose as the free acid, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, or an ester or pro-drug that is hydrolyzed or otherwise metabolized in situ to gemcabene as the free acid or salt thereof. (R-Rindependently represent alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; or Rand R, and Rand R, may form a carbocyclic ring together with the carbon to which they are attached, respectively.
