PURPOSE: To provide a gland packing with good heat resistance, sealing property and workability without using aromatic polyimide by braiding a blended yarn containing rock wool and polyimide fibers made of polyimide resin with a specific composition at specific ratios respectively.
CONSTITUTION: A gland packing suitable for sealing the rotary shaft of a pump and a valve is braided with a blended yarn containing rock wool 80-20wt.% and polyimide fibers 20-80wt.%. The polyimide fibers are made of polyimide resin expressed by the repetition unit of the formula I, where R represents a quadrivalent group selected from an alphatic group with the carbon number 2 or above, a cyclic alphatic group, a monocyclic aromatic group, a condensation polycyclic aromatic group and a non-condensation polycyclic aromatic group with aromatic groups connected directly or via a cross linking member.
