NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I [wherein R, R', R" and R"' are each H, F, Cl, a group represented by formula II (n is 1-12), a group represented by formula III or the like; Z is a single bond, -COO-, -OOC-, -N=N-, -CH=OH- or the like; and X is a group represented by formula IV, V, VI, VII or VIII].
EXAMPLE: 1,12-Bis/2,5-bis-(4-n-octyloxybenzoyloxy)-benzamide/dodecane represented by formula IX.
USE: A mixing component of a liquid crystal mixture forming a smectic phase for the production of an optical constitution element and for a thermoelectro- optical data memory apparatus and capable of being changed to a glass state when temp. is lowered.
PROCESS: For example, 1,12-diamino-dodecane is mixed with triethylamine and 4-dimethylamino-pyridine in anhydrous toluene and 2,5-bis-(4-n- octyloxybenzoyloxy) benzoyl chloride in anhydrous toluene is added to the mixture and the whole is heated to obtain the compd. represented by the formula such as the compd. represented by formula IX.
