PURPOSE: To obtain bronze glass for vehicles having high UV and heat ray absorbing ability by melting and molding starting materials blended so as to form a specified compsn. contg. iron oxide, cobalt oxide, nickel oxide and selenium.
CONSTITUTION: Various starting materials for glass are blended so as to form a compsn. consisting of, by weight, 65-80% SiO2, 0-5% Al2O3, 0-5% B2O3, 0-10% MgO, 5-15% CaO (5-15% MgO+CaO), 10-18% Na2O, 0-5% K2O (10-20% Na2O+ K2O), 0.1-1% (expressed in terms of CeO2) cerium oxide, 0.2-0.6% (expressed in terms of Fe2O3) iron oxide, 0-0.005% CoO, 0.1-0.01% NiO, 0.2-3% Er2O3 and 0.0003-0.005% Se. The resulting blend is melted by heating and molded to obtain glass for vehicles having ≥70% transmittance to visible light, ≤60% transmittance to solar radiation having 570nm principal wavelength and ≤10% transmittance to UV (350nm) in the case of 4mm thickness.
