PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing a gold ornament without the pattern formed by gold being damaged and having a good appearance.

CONSTITUTION: A pattern 5 is formed on the surface of an ornamental base material 6 with gold. The pattern 5 is covered with a protective layer 1 of SiO2, etc. The protective layer 1 may cover not only the pattern 5 surface but also the ornamental face 60 of the base material 6 on which the pattern 5 is formed. The thickness of the protective layer 1 is preferably controlled to 0.01-10μm. The ornamental base material 6 is formed, for example, with one among ceramic glass crystallized glass, metal or enamel. The protective layer 1 is formed by applying the hydrolyzate of tetraalkyl silicate on the ornamental face 60 on which the pattern 5 is formed and heat-treating the hydrolyzate.
