PURPOSE: To produce a blend containing N-lower alkylglutarimide-containing polyamide/grafted poly(glutarimide) ionomer by reacting polyamide and poly(glutarimide) at high temp. in the presence of a base catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: Polyamide (having at last one terminal primary amine group) and poly(glutarimide) [containing at least 5 wt.% of N-lower alkylglutarimide, at least 0.015 milimol/g of (meth)acrylic anhydride and a monomer selected from mixed methacrylic anhydride-acrylic acid, (meth)acrylic acid] are reacted in the presence of a catalytic amt. of a base at raised temp. to form an ionomer to produce a transparent tough polymer blend containing polyamide, poly(glutarimide) and at least 5 wt.% of N-lower alkylglutarimide-containing polyamide-grafted poly(glutarimide) ionomer.
