Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a graft polymer useful as dry and wet strength agents for paper by carrying out radical polymerization of a monomer containing a specified N-vinylcarboxylamide with a saccharide (derivative) in a prescribed weight ratio.
CONSTITUTION: Monomers (mixture) are prepared that are made up of 10 to 100 wt.% N-vinylcarboxylamide of formula I (wherein R1 and R2 represent each H or a 1-6C alkyl), 0 to 90 wt.% monoethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the monomers and free from any carboxyl group, and 0 to 5 wt.% monomer having ethylenically unsaturated nonconjugated double bonds in the molecule. The monomers are subjected to radical polymerization with a saccharide selected from among monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides and their derivatives in a weight ratio of (95:5) to (20:80). Then, if necessary, the group of formula II based on the monomer of formula I is eliminated to form units of formula III to obtain a graft polymer of the saccharide (derivative) and the ethylenically unsaturated compound.
