PURPOSE: To provide a granular catalyst for fuel reformers wherein the problem of the compressive strength of the catalyst is solved by providing a carrier whose structure can be deformed easily.
CONSTITUTION: A granular catalyst 30a is composed of a carrier 31a and a nickel-alumina-based catalyst 32 carried on the surface of the carrier. The carrier 31a is prepared by cutting a cylinder with about 7.5mm diameter D1 and 0.2mm thickness t1 and made of a ferrite-based stainless steel (containing 5% of aluminum and 20% of chromium) into about 7.5mm height and piercing a plurality of fine holes 33a with 0.5mm diameter d1 in the whole surface and the carrier can be deformed easily when pressed to the diameter direction from the out side. The catalyst 32 is prepared by applying an aqueous solution of a mixture of alumina sol, rare earth elements, and nickel metal particles to the carrier 31a and drying the resulting carrier, and then sintering the carrier for about 5 hours at 600°C to make the catalytic substance carried on the carrier 31a and in the preparation process, since the aluminum the catalyst 32 contains is bound with aluminum the carrier contains and thus the catalyst 32 is firmly stuck to the carrier 31a by baking, powdering of the catalyst 32 hardly occurs.
