Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve both the heat-insulation characteristics and the chemical resistance by bonding an expanded graphite sheet and a metal foil with each other, cutting in the form of band, forming the band with the metal foil inside in the form of a longitudinal roll and weaving the roll into graphite yarn for use as packing.

CONSTITUTION: A sheet of expanded graphite 3 and a foil 2 of metal such as steel are bonded with each other and cut into a band. The band is formed into a longitudinal roll as a single graphite yarn 1 with the metal foil 2 inside. Used as a longitudinal string, the graphite yarn 1 is woven into a braid, which is used as a packing. In such constitution the metal foil is held for each yarn and therefore graphite will not separate, on account of which the packing may be provided with the heat-insulation characteristics and the chemical resistance.
