PURPOSE: To improve cylindricity and surface roundness and reduce the time for grinding by directing the main spindle for workpiece in a direction perpendicular to two grinding-wheel spindles having grinding wheels whose end faces are opposed to each other, rotating a workpiece, and axially moving the workpiece and the grinding wheels.
CONSTITUTION: The face of action of a grinding wheel 19 is adjusted to be equal to the diameter of a workpiece 1. A cylinder 16 is energized toward right, a table 17 moves rightward at a high speed, and the workpiece 1 is decelerated right in front of the griding wheel 19, moves to the right end with rotating, and is ground in a two face width. Then, a workpiece spindle motor 25 is tarted, rotating the workpiece 90° at a middle speed, and then, the workpiece is rotated 180°, to grind the whole periphery of the workpiece and, further, through the signal of a rotary angle sensor for a chuck 24, the workpiece 1 is rotated at a high speed to make the surface being ground smooth. Then, the table 17 is moved leftward at a low speed and the workpiece is fed at a high speed after it comes off from the grinding wheel 19, and the table 17 returns to its original position while the rotation of the workpiece stops.
