PURPOSE: To provide a surface grinder provided with a grindstone at the lowr end of a vertical grindstone spindle wherein a grindstone cradle replacing an old grindstone to a new one is provided as to shorten the down time required for changing the old grindstone to a new one.
CONSTITUTION: A grindstone spindle 1 is supported so as to elevate freely by a column 17 in a bed 12, a grindstone 8 being attached to the lower end of the spindle by means of an automatic clutch, and the upper surface of a work 19 which moves longitudinally on the bed 12 being ground. A grindstone cradle 20 for receiving the old grindstone 8, and a grindstone stand 21 placing a grindstone 8' thereon are provided at the sides of the grindstone stand 21. Pallets 10, 10' which are provided on the grindstone cradle and the grindstone stand each are turned in the same direction as that of the spindle 1, and are moved vertically at the same time. Thus, the old grindstone is replaced by a new one in a short time.
