To obtain a hair-treating agent containing shellac, a synthetic polymer, an alcohol and water in a specific ratio, low in the contact of a volatile organic substance, and excellent in hair dressing, sprayability and usability.
This hair-treating agent comprises (A) shellac whose 50-80% is neutralized with a neutralizing agent selected form a primary amine, a secondary amine, a tertiary amine, an aminoalcohol, an alkali metal hydroxide and an ammonia aqueous solution preferably in an amount of 0.1-10wt.%, (B) one of synthetic polymers each having a coating film-forming property and a hair- dressing property, such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone, preferably in an amount of 0.01-20wt.%, (C) 10-80wt.% of a 1-4C alcohol (e.g. ethyl alcohol) and (D) 20-90wt.% of water.
