PURPOSE: To provide a hairdye containing a specific anthracene derivative, capable of dyeing air under mild conditions, having excellent safety and high storage stability, and exhibiting sufficient and stable color development.

CONSTITUTION: The objective hairdye contains ≥0.05wt%, preferably 0.1W 2wt% 2,3-dihydro-9,10-dihydroxyanthracene-1,4-dione of formula. The compound of formula is a leuco compound having moderate stability and prepared by treating 1,4-dihydroxyanthracene with a proper reducing agent. It is oxidized under mild conditions to effect strong color development, and dyes the hair without damaging the skin and the hair.
