In the hand operated mill 10 wherein housings 11, 12 are connected to the opening part 2 of a container 1 housing a granular material S to be ground on the upper part sides thereof and have the discharge port 22 disposed on the side of the lower bottom part thereof and have meshed inner and outer teeth 20, 18 arranged therein and the material S to be ground supplied from the opening part 2 of the container is supplied to the gaps between both teeth 20, 18 under its own weight and rubbed between both teeth 20, 18 by the relative rotation of both teeth 20, 18 to be discharged out of the discharge port 22, shutter means 15, 16 are provided to the opening space (in the housing 11) for supplying the material to be ground communicating with the spaces between the upper part and both teeth 20, 18 of the housings 11, 12 and the opening space is automatically closed by the shutter means 15, 16 when the container is turned from such a use state that the discharge port 22 is turned downward to such a state that the discharge port 22 is turned upward by reversing the whole up and down.
