PURPOSE: To provide picture input function and coordinate position detection function to be used in common, to switch them by means of one switch, and to reduce an installation space by adding a mechanical coordinate position detection device to a handy scanner.

CONSTITUTION: When the read mode change over switch 7 is set to a coordinate position detection mode, a guide roller floating ball 16 is fixed, a pitch roller/ guide roller 5 floats and a horizontal shift is attained. When the scanner mainbody 1 is shifted, a ball 4 moves and it is transmitted to X-detection and Y-direction shift quantity detectors 12 and 13. Consequently, a coordinate posi tion detection encoder 14 obtains respective coordinates in an X-direction and a Y-direction and they are transmitted to a controller 10. The controller 10 receives them and transfers the coordinates to a host computer through an interface cable 6. Consequently, the switching of picture input and coordinate position detection modes is attained by one switch, then operational trouble-some ness is eliminated and the installation space can be reduced.
