To provide a hazardous waste treatment method and its apparatus which can sufficiently heat and decompose material to be treated to reduce its volume after the treatment in comparison with the volume before the treatment.
A melting furnace 2 made of heat-resistant ceramics is provided upright in floatation above a floor. An openable and closable upper lid 4 and lower lid 5 are provided at the upper and lower openings of the melting furnace 2. A suction port 7 is provided in either the melting furnace 2 or the upper lid 4. A heating element is provided around the melting furnace 2. A heated drop lid with a droppable weight is provided so as to hang from the back surface of the upper lid 4. A material to be treated is put into the melting furnace 2, and the inside of the melting furnace 2 is sucked from the suction port 7 to reduce pressure. The inside of the melting furnace 2 is heated by the heating element. The heated drop lid is dropped down and brought into contact with the material to be treated, which melts the material to be treated in the melting furnace 2 to reduce its volume. The gas in the melting furnace 2 is sucked from the suction port 7 and discharged outside through an odor elimination and sterilization device.
