Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a heat insulating material which is excellent in the heat insulatability of the molten steel in a tundish.

CONSTITUTION: The heat insulating material which contains 20 to 30 wt.% MgO, 35 to 42 wt.% SiO2, 10 to 20 wt.%; Al2O3 and 3 to 4 wt.% water of crystallization as essential components and has a bulk specific gravity below 0.3 is produced. A and B denote the composition having an SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 2/1 to 1/1. The initially fed heat insulating material is produced by using the composition in this range added with 20 to 35 wt.% MgO as an essential component. Such tundish heat insulating material coats the surface of the molten steel in the tundish for continuous casting to two layers with the initially fed heat insulating material as a lower layer, thereby shutting off the molten steel from air and providing heat insulation. The heat insulating material less picks up hazardous gases and is particularly suitable for continuous casting of extra-low carbon steel.
