To provide a heat treating furnace that can accomplish energy conservation by reducing the quantity of hydrocarbon used for generating an atmospheric gas and eliminating the need of cooling and reheating of the gas.
The gas outlet 11a of a retort 11 filled up with a catalyst and provided in the converting furnace 12 of an endothermic gas generator 10 using hydrocarbon as a feedstock is made to communicate with an air inlet 7 provided in the furnace wall 6 of the heat treating furnace 1 by fitting the gas outlet 12a of the converting furnace 12 to the furnace wall 6. In addition, a recovery path 20 one end of which is opened in the furnace chamber 2 of the furnace 1 and the other end of which is connected to the feedstock supplying section of the retort 11 and through which the interior gas of the furnace 1 is recovered and supplied to the retort 11 after the gas is cooled by means of a gas cooler 22 is provided so as to return a mixture of the interior gas and hydrocarbon to the heat treating furnace 1 as a carbon monoxide-containing atmospheric gas by reducing the carbon dioxide contained in the mixture by means of the endothermic gas generator 10.
