NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R1 is alkyl or alkoxy; Q is group of formula II or III; A is bond, -O- or -OC(=0)-; X is halogen; n1, n2 and 4 are 0 or 1; n3 is 0-6; n1 and n2 are not 0 at the same time; C* is asymmetric carbon atom].

EXAMPLE: (S)-6-{4-(6-methyloctyloxy)phenyl}-3-octyl-1,2,4-triazine.

USE: A liquid crystal material and liquid crystal element.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula VI is produced by reacting a compound of formula IV or its salt with a compound of formula V (Y1 is acid residue). Some of the compounds of formula IV used as a starting raw material are novel substances.
