NEW MATERIAL: A heterocyclic thioether of formula I (wherein X and Y are each independently O or S).
EXAMPLE: Cis-2-methyl-3-(2-methyl-3-thienylthio)tetrahydrothiophene.
USE: Useful as a flavoring agent, strengthening the taste and mellowness of a meat-like flavor compsn., imparting mellowness to a nut- or hazelnut-base flavoring agent, and increasing the sense of fulfillment in taste. Useful also for feed for animals.
PROCESS: A compd. represented by formula II (wherein R1 is a tosylate group, or Br) is reacted with a thiol represented by formula III to give a compd. represented by formula I. Pref. the reaction is conducted in an alcohol (e.g. methanol or ethanol) at a temp. in the range of from 0°C to the b.p. of the alcohol. pref. at room temp., in the presence of a base.
