Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new compound which has an extremely high value of optical anisotropy, a wide range of liquid crystal temperature, a low viscosity and shows adequate stability under the conditions at which the compound is used as a liquid crystal element and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal materials.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1, R2 are alkyl, an alkoxy; rings A and B are 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; X is H, F), for example, 1-(4- ethyl-phenyl)-6-(4-propylphenyl)hex-3E-ene-1,5-diyne. A compound of formula I where X is H is obtained by coupling reaction of an acetylenic derivative of formula II with a vinyl chloride derivative of formula III in the presence of a Pd complex catalyst of 0 or 2 valency such as dichlorobistriphenylphosphine palladium and copper iodide cocatalyst in diethylamine. The compound of formula III is obtained by coupling reaction of an acetylenic derivative of formula IV with 1,2-dichloroethylene.
