Abstract:

To provide a ruthenium and osmium metal carbene complex that has high methathesis activity and high initiation speed.

A polymerization method of cyclic olefin that includes a step wherein a cyclic olefin (except dicyclopentadiene) is catalytically brought into contact with a compound represented by the formula (wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Os and Ru; R9 and R10 are each selected from the group consisting of H, an alkyl, and an aryl; X and X1 are each selected from among anionic ligands; L and L1 are each independently a neutral electron donor; in the case when R9 and R10 are each a substituted alkyl and R9 and R10 are each a substituted aryl, the substituents are selected from the group consisting of an alkyl, aryl, alcohol, thiol, ketone, aldehyde, ester, ether, amine, imine, amide, nitro, carboxylic acid, disulfide, carbonate, isocyanate, carbodiimide and halogen).
